Riots in Hackney

Just a few of the photos that Son took last night. Both my kids live in Hackney.

They went out in that? Good grief.

Zhoen, just Son did (with friend). Apparently all the aggression was directed at police, shops and cars. But still!

hell's teeth! yes I have family and friends there too and another in Clapham who described coming home from work to find riots going on round the corner from her flat. She was so shocked she asked a policewoman 'is this a riot?' She still can't sleep...

Christ, it does look bad. I failed to watch the news yesterday, but I'm hoping that what was said when I last did (that it's calming down a bit) is true - although I did hear of the deaths in Birmingham and am - as obviously everybody else is - appalled. Keeping the young S's in my heart, you know what I mean, Schwesterlein.

The South of France yachting, on the other hand, sounds fairly fabulous and more than totally deserved. Have a rip-roaring time, won't you - no, just make sure you do, k? K.

Mwahs galore

Glad your kids are okay. I was glued to the Internet and streaming radio during the whole thing.

I must say, he's brave for going out with all that going on. Worrying, all the same. It was an awful night from what I saw on TV, although I could hear the helicopters and sirens as it was all happening near where I am too.

So damn scary. What do you think of the tough sentencing?

Hi Jenny,

I was as angry as anyone about the ghastly destruction. But I think some of the sentences have been out of all proportion - six months for stealing chewing gum, to show us all that justice is being done - another way to hammer the poor because we don't understand and don't know how to respond. The sentence should fit the crime, that's all.
